How It Started
Party Island began in the summer of 2020—when Austin shut down.
With swimming holes and gathering spots closed, people started finding their way to the water. At the meeting point of Barton Springs / Barton Creek and the Colorado River, paddleboards, kayaks, and boats began connecting naturally into a floating hangout.
No one organized it.
It just happened.
The First Setup
At the same time, the idea was already in motion:
What if you could DJ on the water?
Dustn’eM started with a paddleboard, a cooler, and a small controller, the first setup was simple, mobile, and completely self-built. There was no stage, no infrastructure, and no blueprint—just trial and error.
People responded immediately.
But they all said the same thing:
“Make it louder.”
Building the Floating System
Over the next few years, the setup evolved piece by piece:
From a paddleboard to a floating dock
From a single speaker to a full sound system
From battery rigs to generators and back to optimized battery power
From improvised layouts to a fully dialed-in floating DJ platform
Every upgrade came from being out there, listening, adjusting, and building something that actually worked on the water.
It wasn’t easy.
Everything had to be carried, assembled, and paddled out—often against wind, current, and conditions that made even getting there a challenge.
But it kept growing.
A Community Forms
As the sound improved, so did the experience.
Other DJs began to show up on the water—what became known as Aqua DJs.
Instead of competing, the format stayed simple:
One DJ plays
Then the next
Back-to-back
No overlap. No sound clash.
Just a shared understanding of how to make it work.
At the same time, the focus stayed consistent:
Keep the water clean
Keep people safe
Respect the shared space
Party Island was never just about music—it was about doing it the right way.
Recognition & Growth
As more people found their way to the water, Party Island started getting noticed beyond the lake, including a feature in Texas Monthly.
From there, things continued to grow:
Brand activations with companies like Nike
Fitness events and community gatherings
Collaborations with paddle and outdoor brands
Independent events built entirely from the water up
At the same time, others began to take notice of the format and attempt their own versions.
Staying True
As new groups entered the space, the difference became clear:
Party Island wasn’t built as a business first.
It was built from:
Consistency
Community
Respect for the environment
A commitment to keeping the experience accessible
That foundation hasn’t changed.
Where It Is Now
Today, Party Island has evolved into a fully developed floating experience:
Professional, battery-powered sound system
Multiple speaker configuration with subwoofer
Original event flyers and branded gatherings
Growing online presence through @partyislandatx
And still:
No stage
No tickets
No barriers
What It Means
Party Island isn’t a venue.
It isn’t a “normal” event.
It’s something you find when you’re out on the water and the music is right.
You don’t get invited to Party Island.
You find it.
Looking Forward
The next phase is already underway:
Growing the community both on and off the water
Creating new types of floating experiences
But the core stays the same:
Built on water.
Built for the people.
